Ahmedabad, Sep 14 (NationPress) - The Governor of Gujarat, Acharya Devvrat, is set to be sworn in as the new Governor of Maharashtra this coming Monday. The oath-taking ceremony is slated for 11 a.m. at the Darbar Hall within Raj Bhavan, located in Mumbai.
This appointment comes after former Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan resigned on September 11 following his election as Vice President of India.
On Sunday morning, Acharya Devvrat, accompanied by his wife, Darshana Devi, made the journey from Ahmedabad to Mumbai via the Tejas Express.
At the age of 66, Devvrat has held the position of Gujarat's Governor since 2019. A former educator and active member of the Arya Samaj, he previously worked as the principal of a Gurukul in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
Earlier this week, he received his formal appointment from President Droupadi Murmu to take on this additional role.
The official statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan on September 11 indicated, "Due to the resignation of C.P. Radhakrishnan as Governor of Maharashtra, the President of India has appointed Acharya Devvrat, the Governor of Gujarat, to also undertake the responsibilities of the Maharashtra Governor alongside his existing duties."
Besides his gubernatorial duties, Devvrat is also the Vice Chancellor of multiple universities in Gujarat. Prior to this, he served as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
Devvrat is recognized for his promotion of natural farming and the enhancement of cattle breeds, advocating for sustainable agricultural methods. He holds advanced degrees in History and Hindi, along with a diploma in Yoga Science.
His predecessor, Radhakrishnan, was elected as the 15th Vice President of India on Tuesday, receiving 452 votes against the 300 votes for the opposition candidate, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy.
On September 12, Radhakrishnan was inaugurated at a formal ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
