Kolkata, Feb 19 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, took a stand on Wednesday against the assertions made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the Assembly session on Tuesday. Banerjee claimed that the planned Jagannath Temple in Digha, located in the East Midnapore district of the state, has been designed after the renowned Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.

“On Tuesday, the Chief Minister challenged my bravery for questioning her statements regarding the proposed temple in Digha, which she asserts is modeled on the famous temple in Puri. I now challenge her to respond to my inquiries about her assertions,” Adhikari stated on Wednesday.

The Leader of the Opposition emphasized that the Chief Minister needs to explain why the upcoming temple in Digha is referred to as ‘Jagannath Dham Cultural Centre’ instead of ‘Shree Shree Jagannath Temple’.

“The Chief Minister should promptly order a name change from ‘Jagannath Dham Cultural Centre’ to ‘Shree Shree Jagannath Temple’ in all relevant state government records. This name change should also reflect in the tenders and documents of WBHIDCO, which is in charge of constructing the proposed temple in Digha, funded by the state government,” the BJP leader remarked.

Furthermore, Adhikari pointed out the traditional practice that permits only Hindus to enter the Puri temple and urged that a notice be displayed at the main entrance of the new temple, written in five languages.

According to him, if the Chief Minister claims that the Digha temple is modeled after the Puri temple, then a similar notice regarding Hindu-only entry should be prominently displayed at the new temple’s entrance.

“The Chief Minister has questioned my courage, so I want to remind her that in the 2021 Assembly elections, I ran against her in the Nandigram constituency and defeated her by a margin of 1,956 votes,” stated the Leader of the Opposition.
