Kolkata, Dec 30 (NationPress) Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the former head of the West Bengal Congress, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday at his residence, urging him to take action against the violence directed at Bengali-speaking migrant workers.
Following the meeting, Chowdhury informed reporters that he raised concerns about attacks on Bengali-speaking migrant workers, particularly in BJP-led states.
“I had a discussion with the Prime Minister during my visit to New Delhi for the Congress Working Committee meeting. I requested an appointment and explained that millions of migrant workers from West Bengal face oppression in other states, particularly in those governed by the BJP. I asked the Prime Minister to address this issue,” Chowdhury stated.
During their conversation, Chowdhury brought up the importance of safeguarding the voting rights of the Matua community, who have settled in West Bengal.
“Previously, I had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Matua voters. The Prime Minister assured me that he would look into both concerns I raised during our meeting today,” Chowdhury added.
He noted that the Matuas have historically supported either the BJP or the Trinamool Congress.
“However, they are now apprehensive about losing their voting rights due to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision process,” he remarked.
Chowdhury emphasized that it is the obligation of the Union government to address these issues.
“The Matuas are a socially disadvantaged group within the Hindu community,” Chowdhury concluded.
