Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday, 30 September deflected criticism over his absence from the INDIA bloc opposition alliance meeting in New Delhi, posting on social media platform X that the BJP's 'biggest sorrow' is that the INDIA alliance remains 'firmly united.' His remarks came hours after several BJP leaders seized on his no-show to question the cohesion of the opposition grouping.

Why Akhilesh Skipped the Meeting

The Samajwadi Party was represented by its other leaders at the New Delhi gathering, and the party had flagged Yadav's prior commitments well in advance. SP spokesperson Ashutosh Verma explained a day earlier that the party chief had pre-scheduled programmes linked to the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and Rajya Sabha polls. 'Since party chief Akhilesh Yadav already has scheduled programmes in view of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and Rajya Sabha polls, it might not be possible for him to immediately attend the meeting. Especially because it is more important for him (Yadav) now to be on the ground (for campaigns),' Verma said.

Verma also added, 'We stand with the INDIA bloc and believe steps should be taken for the wrongdoings within the Election Commission.' Separately, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy confirmed that Yadav had notified the alliance beforehand — he was in Lucknow to submit Ram Gopal Yadav's nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls.

Alliance Partners Defend the Absence

Roy described Yadav's prior communication as sufficient, telling reporters, 'Yes, we know that. Akhilesh Yadav had already informed us that he would be in Lucknow today to submit Ram Gopal Yadav's nomination.' He also characterised the meeting positively, saying: 'It is an effort to organise an INDI Alliance meeting at short notice, which is a good thing.'

Uttar Pradesh Congress in-charge Rajendra Pal Gautam struck a similar note, stressing that attendance or representation was ultimately Yadav's call. 'This is for Akhilesh Yadav to see, what is the importance of the INDIA bloc and how much importance to give to it. Whether he attends or sends his representative, that is his prerogative,' Gautam said. He further emphasised, 'Our prerogative is that the INDI Alliance remains strong, the country's democracy and Constitution are protected, and respect is given to all parties in the alliance, which we are giving.'

Akhilesh's Counter-Punch on X

Rather than directly address the BJP's barbs, Yadav took to X to turn the narrative on its head. In his post, he wrote: 'This is BJP's biggest sorrow that INDIA is firmly united.' The framing is significant — it positions any criticism of internal alliance dynamics as an admission by the ruling party that the opposition coalition poses a genuine threat. This is not the first time Yadav has used social media to rebuff BJP attacks on opposition cohesion; however, his physical absence at a high-profile bloc gathering does supply the ruling party with fresh talking points ahead of a crucial electoral cycle in Uttar Pradesh.

The episode reflects a recurring tension within multi-party opposition alliances: balancing ground-level electoral imperatives with the optics of pan-alliance solidarity. With Uttar Pradesh — India's most populous state and a critical electoral battleground — heading into an intense campaign season, the SP's calculus of prioritising state-level mobilisation over national-level photo-ops is unlikely to change.
