Agartala to get clean water plant, AI response team: CM Manik Saha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday, 8 October 2026, laid the foundation stones for two major civic infrastructure projects in Agartala, pledging to transform the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area into a clean, modern, and citizen-friendly city with all development works completed within stipulated deadlines.
Key Developments at Collegetila
The foundation-stone-laying ceremony was held at Collegetila under Ward No. 24 of the Agartala Municipal Corporation. The two flagship projects — a 6.81 million-litre-capacity surface water treatment plant and a 680-kilolitre-capacity overhead water tank — will together cost ₹18.17 crore, according to Chief Minister Saha.
On the same occasion, Saha also launched a WhatsApp-based complaint reporting and calling system and flagged off 10 vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for the Chief Minister's Rapid Response Team. An additional ₹2.78 crore has been earmarked for the Rapid Response Team vehicles and truck-mounted water tankers.
What the Government Said
Emphasising drinking water access as a foundational civic right, Saha stated, 'Because without water, plants and animals cannot exist. It is necessary to create a system of water conservation for the well-being of not only the present but also future generations.'
He added that the current state government had taken the initiative to provide pure drinking water in every ward area of the AMC — a step he described as central to building a citizen-friendly environment. The Chief Minister also highlighted that an AI-based response system had been introduced alongside the WhatsApp calling mechanism, with the stated objective of making Agartala a 'zero complaint' city.
Saha noted that this marks the first time such a sophisticated civic-service system has been deployed in the state. He drew a parallel with the 'Amar Sarkar' portal, through which, he said, residents across Tripura had already accessed government services, expressing confidence that people across the four zones of the AMC would similarly benefit from the AI-enabled system.
Political Context and Infrastructure Critique
Chief Minister Saha also used the occasion to draw a contrast with the previous administration. 'During the 25 years of rule of the previous government, no renovation work of drinking water was done in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area,' he claimed, attributing present-day civic challenges to this long gap in investment.
He acknowledged that residents in certain localities are currently facing temporary disruptions — including pipeline-related road works — but assured that these inconveniences would be short-lived as development accelerates.
Officials Present
The ceremony was attended by Mayor and Agartala Municipal Corporation MLA Dipak Majumdar, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, and other senior officials and prominent citizens.
With the water treatment plant, overhead tank, and AI-based civic grievance system now in motion, Agartala's transformation into a model urban centre will be closely watched as a benchmark for smart-city governance in Northeast India.
