Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 14 (NationPress) - Agents of the Special Task Force (STF) from the West Bengal Police apprehended an individual on Saturday who is believed to have assisted two assassins of Bangladeshi radical organization Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi in fleeing to West Bengal from Bangladesh following the murder in December of the previous year.
The arrested individual, identified as Philip Sangma, was taken into custody by the STF in the Santipur Bypass area of Nadia district, as confirmed by a senior police official.
Earlier, on March 8, the STF had captured the two murderers of Hadi - Rahul alias Faisal Karum Masud and Alamgir Hossain - who had also escaped to West Bengal after the killing in December.
They were apprehended in a village adjacent to the India-Bangladesh border within the Bangaon sub-division in Nadia district.
During their interrogation, Rahul and Alamgir disclosed to the investigators that Sangma had facilitated their illegal border crossing and escape to West Bengal from Bangladesh for a substantial fee.
According to state police officials, acting on intelligence, the STF managed to arrest Sangma from the Santipur Bypass area on Saturday.
“Upon questioning, Sangma confessed to aiding individuals in crossing the Halurghat border in Bangladesh and the Dalupara border in Meghalaya illegally for monetary gain. He also admitted to facilitating the entry of the two murderers of Hadi into West Bengal from Bangladesh,” stated the police official.
Sangma was later brought before a district court on Saturday, which ordered him to be held in police custody.
Sharif Osman Hadi was fatally shot in Dhaka in December of last year and subsequently succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Singapore.
Hadi's death triggered significant unrest across Bangladesh. The chargesheet submitted by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) in the murder investigation has identified Faisal and Alamgir as the principal suspects.
