Why is it Critical to Accelerate AI for Inclusive Growth, According to CEA Nageswaran?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 16 (NationPress) The much-anticipated ‘India AI Impact Summit 2026’ commenced in New Delhi on Monday, where senior leaders and policymakers urged for immediate steps to harness artificial intelligence (AI) for fostering inclusive growth.
Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V. Anantha Nageswaran highlighted that each year of delay in advancing AI limits both economic and technological alternatives.
"India must take action now to utilize the advantages of AI for promoting inclusive growth," stated Nageswaran, emphasizing the nation's potential to become the first large society where human abundance and machine intelligence collaborate.
Nageswaran called for a unified “Team India” strategy that encompasses government, private sectors, academia, and policymakers, while stressing the importance of enhancing foundational education and developing high-quality skills.
According to him, AI advancement “will not occur by chance” and necessitates urgency, political determination, and robust state capabilities.
The initial step towards AI-driven prosperity should commence with educational reforms and the enhancement of foundational skills, the CEA remarked, advocating for the growth of labor-intensive service sectors and the elimination of regulatory barriers.
He warned that insufficiently calibrated actions could lead to social and economic instability.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, emphasized that AI development should remain human-centered and accessible to all.
Krishnan asserted that the government's primary message is to ensure AI facilitates democratic access to resources while prioritizing people in the technological transformation. “AI resources must be democratically accessible, and it should be structured to keep people at the forefront,” he stated.
He characterized AI as a potent catalyst for economic growth, noting its capacity to accelerate development not only in India but throughout the Global South.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in the global participation at the summit.
The AI Expo will take place from February 16 to 20, concurrently with the India AI Impact Summit, at the same location in the capital.
Spanning over 10 arenas across more than 70,000 square meters, the event will unite global tech companies, startups, academia, research institutions, Union Ministries, state governments, and international collaborators.
