Chennai, June 24 (NationPress) Facing significant backlash for their silence during the BJP-supported “Murugan Bakthargal Manadu” in Madurai, senior AIADMK figure and Tamil Nadu's Deputy Leader of the Opposition R B Udhayakumar on Tuesday vehemently criticized the disparagement of Dravidian icons Thanthai Periyar and C N Annadurai at the gathering.

The AIADMK has recently faced scrutiny over the past two days due to the presence of its senior officials at the event, which showcased a contentious video. Udhayakumar clarified the party's position through a video statement.

He explained that he and other prominent leaders, including Sellur K Raju, V V Rajan Chellappa, Kadambur C Raju, and K T Rajenthra Balaji, attended the conference solely as devotees of Lord Murugan, believing it to be an apolitical gathering.

“We thought the event would be a celebration of spirituality and culture, rather than a political arena for attacking ideologies or individuals,” Udhayakumar stated.

“We participated to promote religious harmony and respect for diverse opinions,” he emphasized, quoting former Chief Minister Annadurai: “Even the flowers in the neighbor’s garden possess fragrance.”

The uproar began after a video presented at the conference labeled Dravidian leaders as “atheist jackals” and accused them of endorsing a “fake Dravidianism” under the guise of secularism.

The Hindu Munnani, a primary organizer of the event, utilized the occasion to push for the restoration of a “Theiviga Tamil Nadu”, passing resolutions that reportedly called for the elimination of Dravidian ideology from the state.

Nevertheless, Udhayakumar distanced the AIADMK from the video's content and the resolutions. He claimed party members were seated behind the screen during the video presentation and were unaware of the offensive material.

“We had no chance to view the video from where we were positioned on the dais. We were entirely oblivious to the defamatory content,” he stated.

He further affirmed that the AIADMK has consistently defended the legacies of Periyar and Annadurai.

“We never shy away from expressing our dissent whenever these esteemed leaders are criticized,” he remarked.

This incident has reignited political discord in Tamil Nadu, with the AIADMK's attendance at the event provoking sharp responses from opposition factions and pro-Dravidian advocates.

The party's statement seems aimed at mitigating backlash while reaffirming its ideological commitment to its Dravidian heritage.
