Gandhinagar, June 24 (NationPress) With the historic 148th Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath on the horizon, Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel convened a crucial meeting in Gandhinagar to evaluate security and logistical measures along the 16-kilometre route in Ahmedabad.
This annual celebration, steeped in profound religious significance, is scheduled for the second day of Ashadhi and is anticipated to attract large crowds.
The meeting included key figures such as Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi, DGP Vikas Sahay, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, and other senior police officials. Notably, for the first time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be implemented by the Ahmedabad City Police to manage crowd dynamics and identify fire risks in real-time.
Officials reported that the AI system will send alerts if an unusual gathering occurs at certain locations, facilitating prompt crowd control strategies. Additionally, it will detect fire incidents and enable quicker emergency response. Authorities are optimistic that this tech-driven approach will mitigate potential issues and enhance safety for the devotees participating in the religious procession.
The Ahmedabad Police Commissioner presented a comprehensive security strategy involving over 23,884 personnel, including units from the State Reserve Police (SRP), Rapid Action Force (RAF), Chetak Commandos, and local police, ranging from constables to IG-level officers.
To secure the moving procession—which features chariots, religious akhadas, bhajan mandalis, and sadhus—approximately 4,500 officers will accompany it. An additional 1,000 officers under the Joint Commissioner of Traffic will ensure the smooth flow of vehicles throughout the day. Furthermore, twenty-three cranes have been deployed to quickly clear any obstacles.
For real-time surveillance, the police will utilize 227 CCTV cameras, 41 drones, 2,872 body-worn cameras, 25 watchtowers, and 240 check points. All feeds will be monitored live at the central police control room for immediate coordination and response. Additionally, 17 public assistance centres and 44 public address systems will be established to assist the public along the Yatra route.
Prioritizing safety, officials have identified 484 old and dilapidated buildings along the Yatra path. Warning signs and physical barricades have been erected to deter public access to these structures. To promote communal harmony and ensure inclusive participation, the city police have organized 177 Peace Committee meetings, 235 Maholla Committee interactions, 57 Women's Committee gatherings, 21 consultations with religious leaders, and 10 meetings with 'Khalasi' volunteers who pull the chariots.
Community engagement activities such as the Ekta Cup cricket tournament, volleyball matches, mehndi competitions, and blood donation drives have been conducted leading up to the Yatra.
CM Bhupendra Patel emphasized the importance of vigilance, coordination, and public involvement to ensure the Yatra proceeds peacefully, not only in Ahmedabad but across all towns involved in the state. He received a thorough briefing from DGP Vikas Sahay regarding statewide preparedness and expressed confidence that Gujarat's Rath Yatra would continue to symbolize faith, unity, and security.
"With cutting-edge technology, committed personnel, and robust community engagement, this year's Rath Yatra will embody the finest blend of tradition and modern safety protocols," stated the Chief Minister.
