New Delhi, Sep 6 (NationPress) AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi announced on Saturday that his party will back the INDIA bloc's candidate B. Sudershan Reddy in the Vice Presidential election scheduled for September 9.

Owaisi mentioned that he was approached by the office of Telangana's Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to offer support to the retired Supreme Court judge, who is competing against the current Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan (the NDA's nominee) for the Vice Presidency.

In a message on X, the Hyderabad MP stated: "@TelanganaCMO contacted me today and requested that we support Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. @aimim_national will endorse Justice Reddy, a fellow Hyderabadi and distinguished jurist. I also conveyed our best wishes to Justice Reddy in our conversation."

On August 19, former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy was nominated as the candidate for the Vice Presidential election by the united Opposition parties, a move that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge referred to as an “ideological battle”.

Kharge characterized Reddy as a “pro-poor advocate of economic and social causes,” asserting that he embodies the values that underpin our freedom struggle and the principles upon which our Constitution and democracy are founded.

“These values are currently under threat, which is why the Opposition has chosen to engage in this ideological battle together,” he remarked.

Reddy, who practiced law in Andhra Pradesh and served as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in January 2007 and retired in July 2011.

The nomination of Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as the Vice President candidate was made public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President J.P. Nadda on August 12.

The Vice Presidential election was called due to the mid-term resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who left the position for health reasons.

The Vice President is elected by an electoral college made up of members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The NDA’s numerical strength in Parliament provides them with a significant advantage in securing victory for their candidate.

Moreover, the Vice President also holds the role of ex officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, making this position politically crucial.

Point of View

The support for Justice Sudershan Reddy by AIMIM reflects the evolving dynamics of Indian politics, where parties are increasingly aligning based on ideological principles. The upcoming Vice Presidential election is not just a contest for a position, but a significant event that could redefine political alliances and strategies in the country.
