New Delhi, Sep 7 (NationPress) As the Vice-Presidential election approaches on September 9, political dynamics in New Delhi are heating up. Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, is set to host a dinner for Members of Parliament (MPs) from the INDIA bloc on Monday evening at the Parliament Annexe.
This gathering aims to strengthen opposition unity and bolster support for their candidate, former Supreme Court judge Justice (Retd.) B Sudershan Reddy.
Justice Reddy, a highly respected jurist from Hyderabad, has also gained the support of AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. “The Telangana CM reached out to me and asked for support for Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. We will back him — a distinguished jurist and fellow Hyderabadi,” Owaisi shared on X.
The election will see a contest between Reddy, representing the united opposition, and the NDA's candidate, CP Radhakrishnan, a veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu.
The Vice President’s position became vacant following Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation due to health issues on July 21, coinciding with the commencement of the Monsoon Session. The election process will be executed through a secret ballot by an electoral college composed of all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, as stipulated under Article 66 of the Constitution.
On the NDA side, the BJP has effectively mobilized its MPs ahead of the election. All BJP lawmakers were instructed to arrive in Delhi by September 6. BJP President JP Nadda organized a dinner for party MPs that evening, which was followed by a two-day workshop for NDA MPs on September 7 and 8 at the Parliament complex.
The series of events will conclude with a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for NDA MPs at his official residence on the evening of September 8 — serving as a final demonstration of unity before the pivotal Vice Presidential election.
