Chennai, Aug 10 (NationPress) An Air India flight, originating from Thiruvananthapuram and destined for Delhi, had to perform an emergency landing at Chennai airport late on Sunday due to a suspected radar failure.
The flight, AI 2455, was carrying notable political figures, including four Members of Parliament from Kerala - Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, UDF Convenor Adoor Prakash, senior Congress leader Kodikunnil Suresh, and K. Radhakrishnan - along with Tamil Nadu MP Robert Bruce.
After safely landing, K.C. Venugopal recounted the experience to the media, referring to it as a “close call with a serious incident”.
He stated, “The aircraft experienced a radar malfunction, prompting the crew to execute an emergency landing. We were airborne for approximately one hour and ten minutes before touching down. I have already updated the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on the situation.”
Adding to the tension, passengers noted that as the aircraft approached, another plane was on the runway, creating a hazardous scenario.
Adoor Prakash confirmed that the pilots had to make an urgent choice to abort the landing. “We were nearly landing when we spotted another aircraft on the runway. The plane ascended immediately and circled in the air for about thirty minutes before safely landing. The crew managed the situation competently,” he remarked.
Fortunately, all onboard were unharmed; however, this incident has sparked concerns regarding air traffic management and the potential dangers of runway incursions.
Sources have suggested that a technical issue with the aircraft’s radar system led to the diversion, further complicated by the presence of another aircraft during the initial landing attempt.
As of now, airport authorities have not released an official statement.
The DGCA is anticipated to conduct an investigation into both the radar malfunction and the events that led to the aborted landing.
