Ujjain land deals: Akhilesh Yadav says BJP conspiring to oust Mohan Yadav
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday, 23 June alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has engineered a “conspiracy to defame” Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, after media reports linked members of the CM’s family to land acquisitions in Ujjain that could reportedly benefit from upcoming infrastructure projects. The SP chief made the remarks while addressing reporters at an event in Lucknow.
What the Reports Claim
According to media reports, members of CM Mohan Yadav’s family acquired multiple acres of land in Ujjain. The reports allege that these land parcels stand to gain in value from planned infrastructural development in the region. The Madhya Pradesh government has not issued a formal response to the specific allegations as of the time of reporting.
What Akhilesh Yadav Said
Dismissing the allegations against Mohan Yadav as politically motivated, Akhilesh Yadav said: “The BJP has hatched a conspiracy to defame Mohan Yadav. It is not a new thing that he has bought land. Earlier he was involved in the real estate business. Did the BJP not know this?”
The SP chief went further, arguing that the timing of the allegations reveals a broader intra-party power struggle. “These allegations are now being made because the BJP is finding ways to remove three Chief Ministers,” he claimed, naming Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and indirectly referencing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as the other targets. “All this is a conspiracy to remove them,” he added.
On the land registry question, Akhilesh said: “This must have been known earlier as well when the registry of the lands was carried out. Can anyone buy land without registry? So, the government knew all this beforehand.”
Congress Demands Judicial Probe
The Indian National Congress (INC) took a sharper line, demanding a judicial investigation into the land deals. Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari termed the allegations a “huge stain on the face of Madhya Pradesh,” saying the Chief Minister “is completely in the dock” and must answer to the “8 crore people of the state.”
Patwari also called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention, demanding that “a sitting judge of the Supreme Court should conduct an investigation into the matter.”
The Political Context
The controversy surfaces at a moment of reported turbulence within the BJP’s state leadership calculus. Mohan Yadav took charge as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister in December 2023, a surprise pick by the central leadership. Critics argue that his tenure has been marked by persistent speculation about his political standing within the party. Akhilesh’s framing — that the land deal story is an internal BJP operation rather than a genuine accountability exercise — reflects the SP’s broader strategy of highlighting divisions within the ruling party ahead of upcoming electoral cycles. The BJP has not officially responded to Akhilesh Yadav’s claims.
