Amaravati, Dec 19 (NationPress) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed strong opposition on Friday against Karnataka's plan to increase the height of the Almatti Dam on the Krishna River. He called on the Central Government to intervene and halt the proposal, which he believes could negatively affect Andhra Pradesh.
During a meeting with the Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in New Delhi, the Chief Minister highlighted that Karnataka has already begun land acquisition for the dam's expansion and requested the Centre to restrain the state, particularly since the issue is currently before the Supreme Court.
Furthermore, he raised concerns regarding the incomplete implementation of the Vamsadhara Water Disputes Tribunal (VWDT) verdicts. Naidu emphasized the urgent necessity of constructing the Neradi Barrage to combat drought conditions in Srikakulam district and sought clear guidelines from the Centre to ensure that Andhra Pradesh's rights are protected.
The state of Odisha has also voiced objections to the Neradi Barrage's construction due to fears of potential flooding and submergence on its side of the border.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, Naidu requested immediate central support to accelerate significant irrigation and drinking water projects in the state. He also emphasized the need for urgent financial assistance for various projects approved under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act and urged the Centre to organize a high-level review meeting to address long-standing concerns. Emphasizing that water security is vital for the state, he called for enhanced coordination between the Centre and State regarding irrigation and drinking water needs.
Additionally, CM Naidu appealed for an extra Rs 1,000 crore under the Jal Jeevan Mission for the 2025–26 fiscal year, noting that the state has already contributed Rs 524.41 crore as its share and urged the Centre to release its pending contributions promptly.
He also informed the Union Minister about proposals submitted for the restoration of tanks and canals under the PMKSY–RRR scheme, stating that timely release of Central funds would significantly enhance irrigation capacity in rural regions.
Lastly, CM Naidu called for the swift clearance of pending approvals related to various components of the Polavaram National Project. He provided Minister Patil with updates on the progress of the works and mentioned that a detailed report on funding requirements for Phase-II would soon be submitted to the Centre.
