Amit Shah Critiques Opposition for Undermining Speaker's Integrity
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday vehemently condemned the Opposition's actions in the Lok Sabha, asserting that casting doubts on the Speaker's integrity jeopardizes the trustworthiness of the nation’s democratic institutions.
During the proceedings, HM Shah remarked that there was no unique incident that justified extended discord, yet a thorough discussion had already taken place.
“Although no extraordinary incident occurred, a dialogue lasting 10 hours was planned. The debate actually spanned nearly 13 hours,” he noted, stressing that both the treasury benches and the Opposition engaged significantly in the discussions.
HM Shah highlighted that over 42 Members of Parliament participated in the talks, demonstrating that the House allowed for a comprehensive expression of diverse viewpoints.
While acknowledging that differing opinions regarding the Speaker's decisions are natural, HM Shah pointed out that the Lok Sabha's regulations clearly establish the Speaker’s rulings as final.
“However, contrary to this established norm, the Opposition has questioned the Speaker’s integrity,” he stated.
Emphasizing the significance of parliamentary traditions, Shah characterized the Lok Sabha as the nation’s largest democratic forum, whose standing transcends India’s borders.
“India’s democracy has gained credibility and esteem not just domestically but globally. The international community acknowledges the robustness of our democratic structures,” he asserted.
HM Shah warned that challenging the Speaker's integrity—who serves as the custodian and presiding figure of the House—could cast shadows on the perception of India’s democratic processes worldwide.
He observed that traditionally, conflicts involving the Speaker are settled through dialogue rather than confrontation.
“Typically, members convene in the Speaker’s chamber. The Speaker often arranges joint meetings with members from both sides to mediate issues,” HM Shah clarified.
Expressing concern about the current situation, the Home Minister noted that an unusual atmosphere has emerged where even approaching the Speaker’s chamber seems contentious.
“Creating such a scenario is utterly disgraceful,” he remarked.
Stressing that the Speaker's role should remain above party politics to ensure impartiality, HM Shah expressed that questioning the integrity of the institution designed to mediate disputes is profoundly regrettable.
“For 75 years, both Houses of Parliament have fortified the pillars of our democracy. Today, the Opposition has raised doubts about that very foundation and its credibility,” he concluded.
