Amit Shah Defends Speaker Om Birla Amid Opposition's No-Confidence Motion
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed unwavering support for Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday, criticizing the Opposition for their attempt to remove him from his position.
During the discussion on the no-confidence motion against the Speaker, he emphasized that the Speaker transcends party lines and stands above partisan interests.
He stated that the Lok Sabha Speaker represents the entire House, independent of any political affiliation.
“The Speaker acts as the guardian of the House and is accountable to every member. Proposing a no-confidence motion against him is a significant matter. Such actions by the Opposition attack the core principles of the Constitution and democracy,” he asserted.
Shah noted that while 10 hours were designated for the debate, over 40 members engaged, extending the discussion to 13 hours.
“When the Speaker was elected, both the treasury and opposition benches affirmed their confidence in him. While the Speaker's decisions can be scrutinized, they are deemed paramount for all members. The motion against him undermines the fundamental integrity of the Chair,” Amit Shah highlighted.
Contrasting the BJP's commitment to democratic values with that of the Congress, Shah remarked that in the last 70 years, a no-confidence motion has only been proposed three times, with the BJP never involved.
“We uphold parliamentary traditions and respect the sanctity of the Chair. The Samajwadi Party and Communist Party initiated motions against the Speaker during Congress-led administrations, and now they align themselves with the Congress,” he added.
He concluded by stating that questioning the Speaker's position threatens the integrity of India’s parliamentary system and conveys a misleading message to other democracies worldwide.
