New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) - Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta stated on Monday that the impartiality of the Chair is fundamental to the essence of India's parliamentary democracy. He voiced his concern regarding the recent unsuccessful attempt by Opposition parties to oust Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
In a letter addressed to Birla, Gupta remarked, "It is profoundly disappointing that some opposition factions, motivated by limited political motives, opted to propose a motion against the current Speaker—an office that transcends party politics and is tasked with upholding the rules, traditions, and dignity of Parliament."
The motion was rejected through a voice vote in the House on March 11, reaffirming the Members' faith in the authority and impartial operation of the Chair, he noted.
“Institutions that uphold democratic governance should be approached with caution and a sense of duty, considering the broader implications for parliamentary stability and democratic integrity,” he added.
In his correspondence, Gupta highlighted that the role of the Speaker holds exceptional significance in the workings of India’s parliamentary democracy.
The Speaker acts as the custodian of the House’s dignity and the protector of its rules, traditions, and institutional discipline, he emphasized.
“The Chair’s authority guarantees that parliamentary activities are carried out in an orderly and unbiased fashion while protecting the rights and privileges of Members from all political backgrounds,” stated the Delhi Assembly Speaker.
Gupta pointed out that the strength of the Speaker's office is derived from the trust and collective respect of the House.
Following long-established parliamentary norms, the Speaker is expected to rise above party biases and fulfill the responsibilities of the Chair with equity, balance, and institutional integrity, Gupta remarked.
The ongoing credibility of parliamentary institutions hinges on maintaining the dignity, neutrality, and authority associated with this position, he further stated.
