Will Congress Publicly Announce a No-Confidence Motion Against Speaker?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Congress party stated on Tuesday that any initiative to introduce a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will be made public in a formal and constitutional manner. This stance comes as opposition factions intensify their criticism of the Speaker, accusing him of biased behavior during the current session of Parliament.
Responding to rumors regarding the opposition's intentions, Congress MP Pramod Tiwari emphasized that the party will refrain from engaging with speculation until a formal action has been undertaken. He remarked, “Once a no-confidence motion, permissible under the Constitution of India, is filed, we will make a public announcement. Until such an announcement is made, I cannot address speculations or anticipations,” Tiwari informed IANS.
However, inside sources have hinted that the Congress is poised to file a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla, with a notice expected to be submitted soon to the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha. This development arises amidst increasing tensions between the opposition and the treasury benches, characterized by frequent disruptions and heated exchanges.
Members of the INDIA bloc are deliberating this course of action, alleging that the Speaker has acted in a partisan manner and has unjustly denied Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi a chance to speak during the debate on the President’s address. This situation has become a significant point of contention, with the opposition asserting that established parliamentary norms are being compromised.
Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat echoed similar sentiments, asserting that the opposition's grievances stem from concerns about fairness and constitutional integrity, rather than personal grievances.
“I made it clear that the motive is not related to security; rather, it is about the apprehension surrounding the statements that Rahul Gandhi may deliver. The goal is to prevent him from speaking,” Bhagat claimed.
He further elaborated, “If we have discussed a no-confidence motion, it is not aimed at any individual. Our focus is on fairness and impartiality; these principles are central to our stance. The Chair must operate within constitutional boundaries, rather than under the influence of the ruling government.”
According to opposition leaders, the anticipated motion also ties to the recent suspension of eight opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha, the Speaker's alleged inaction against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for inappropriate remarks about former Prime Ministers, and what Congress has described as unfounded allegations against women Congress MPs.
