New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) During his speech in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that certain parties were intentionally spreading misinformation regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill to enhance their electoral support.
He emphasized that the proposed legislation aligns with the aspirations of RJD leader Lalu Prasad, which the opposition had overlooked.
The Home Minister noted that the need for a new statute may have been avoided had the Waqf (Amendment) Act of 2013, enacted under the Congress-led UPA II administration, not been hastily passed just months prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
At that time, Lalu Prasad, whose party was part of the ruling coalition before it withdrew and later provided support, had expressed concerns about the management of Waqf properties.
Quoting Lalu Prasad, HM Amit Shah remarked: "We welcome the amendment bill proposed by the government. I endorse the comments made by (BJP's) Shahnawaz Hussain and others. A significant amount of land has been appropriated, whether government-owned or otherwise. Individuals within the Waqf Board have sold off all the prime land. In Patna, buildings have been erected on Dak Bungalow property. There has been considerable misappropriation like this."
The Home Minister also echoed the RJD leader's demand for more stringent measures: "We endorse the amendments, but we urge you (the UPA government) to enact a strict law in the future and incarcerate such individuals."
While sharing this, HM Amit Shah humorously gestured towards the Opposition benches and stated: "Lalu Prasad's expectations were not met by them (Congress-led UPA), but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fulfilling them. Lalu ji had called for a stricter law."
The Home Minister reiterated that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, is not targeted at any specific religion, and that the Congress and other opposition parties are disseminating falsehoods about the bill to advance their electoral agendas.
