Amit Shah to Lead Conference Addressing Security Risks from Drug Trafficking Tomorrow

New Delhi, Jan 10 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to lead a regional conference titled “Drug Trafficking and National Security” on Saturday, aimed at addressing the escalating concerns surrounding drug trafficking and its effects on the nation's security.

The conference, organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), will also mark the commencement of the Drug Disposal Fortnight, the unveiling of the new office complex for the NCB's Bhopal zonal unit, and the expansion of the MANAS-2 helpline across all 36 states and Union Territories.

Discussions during the conference are anticipated to highlight the repercussions of drug trafficking on national security, focusing particularly on eight states and Union Territories located in northern India.

The agenda includes sharing real-time data from the National Narcotics Helpline ‘MANAS’ portal with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) across various states and Union Territories, evaluating state progress in the fight against drug trafficking, and reviewing the effectiveness of the Narcotics Coordination Mechanism (NCORD).

The agenda will also encompass measures to fortify and augment the operational capabilities of State Forensic Science Laboratories (SFSLs), utilizing the NIDAAN database to enhance counter-drug trafficking initiatives, enforcing the provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, and establishing dedicated NDPS courts for the expedited trial of drug-related offenses.

The conclave aims to promote a comprehensive governmental approach to ensure effective collaboration among all agencies in the war against drug trafficking and abuse.

During the drug disposal fortnight, scheduled from January 11 to January 25, approximately 44,792 kilograms of seized narcotics, valued at an international market rate of Rs 2411 crore, will be disposed of.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has initiated a three-pronged strategy with the goal of achieving a drug-free India by 2047. This strategy encompasses strengthening institutional frameworks, improving coordination among narcotics agencies, and launching an extensive public awareness campaign.

The conference will see participation from Governors, Lt Governors, Chief Ministers, and senior officials from the eight involved states and Union Territories. Senior representatives from various ministries, departments, and law enforcement agencies will also be present at the conference.
