Amit Shah begins 2-day Ladakh visit; sub-committee meet on May 22

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Leh, Ladakh on 30 April for a two-day official visit, during which he is scheduled to offer prayers to the sacred relics of Lord Buddha on 1 May as part of the Buddha Purnima observance. The visit, which comes amid ongoing political dialogue over Ladakh's constitutional status, also coincides with a fresh announcement of talks between the Centre and Ladakh-based political groups.

Key Highlights of the Visit

According to officials, Shah is set to pay his respects to the holy relics of Lord Buddha on 1 May, coinciding with the sacred exposition being held in Ladakh from 1 to 14 May. During his stay, the Home Minister is also expected to review ongoing development projects across the Union Territory and hold interactions with prominent citizens. However, the administration has not yet released a detailed itinerary of his engagements.

Sub-Committee Meeting Announced for May 22

Ahead of the visit, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced that a meeting of the Sub-Committee will be held on 22 May for political dialogue with representatives of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). The previous round of talks between the stakeholders took place on 4 February in New Delhi, making the upcoming meeting the first in nearly three and a half months. The LAB and KDA have long demanded statehood for Ladakh and Sixth Schedule protections for its indigenous communities.
