Kochi, Aug 9 (NationPress) As the election for new office bearers approaches, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has instructed its members to avoid discussing internal affairs with the media until polling day on August 15.
This directive comes amidst a growing feud between actors Ponnamma Babu and Mala Parvathy concerning the association’s finances.
Election officials have issued a warning that any members who contravene this order will face strict penalties. Sources indicate that senior actors, including Mohanlal and Mammootty, have expressed their discontent over the ongoing public dispute.
Ponnamma asserted that when former general secretary Idavela Babu resigned, AMMA’s account held merely Rs 2 crore, which the present committee under Babu Raj has managed to grow to over Rs 7.5 crore. In response, Parvathy contended that the amount was over Rs 5 crore at the time, even after settling debts for parking near AMMA’s headquarters, with additional funds coming in later.
The situation has been exacerbated by controversies surrounding Shwetha Menon, who is running for president. The Kerala High Court has temporarily stayed an obscenity charge against her, which critics claim is part of a smear campaign timed with the elections.
Cuckoo Parameswaran, another candidate, has reported to the State Police chief that her name has been linked to the “memory card” controversy, and she is facing significant cyber harassment. She accused Babu Raj and his associates of orchestrating this campaign.
Parvathy further alleged that Babu Raj's camp is collaborating with YouTubers to create favorable content for him while neglecting critical issues like pursuing the memory card case with the police or addressing the allegations against Shwetha Menon.
“Remaining silent allows their narrative to dominate. This issue needs to be addressed by law enforcement for a definitive resolution. Shwetha and Cuckoo are innocent victims of an election-time smear campaign,” she stated.
The polls on August 15 will see Shwetha Menon competing against Devan for the presidency, while other significant positions are contested by multiple candidates, except for the joint secretary role, where Anziba Hasan has been elected unopposed.
