Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, Feb 20 (NationPress) A scene of chaos unfolded in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council on Friday as the opposition YSR Congress Party demanded a discussion regarding the alleged misconduct in the procurement of ghee for Tirumala laddu, purportedly involving Heritage Foods, a company owned by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
The YSRCP claimed that the connection between Heritage Foods and Indapur Dairy was revealed through evidence of inflated contracts and the reversal of disqualifications, prompting the party to propose an adjournment motion for debate.
As Council Chairman Koyye Moshenu Raju dismissed the adjournment motion requests from YSRCP members, they attempted to disrupt the session by chanting slogans.
Opposition lawmakers displayed images of Sri Venkateswara Swamy while Minister for Finance and Legislative Affairs Payyavula Keshav objected to their actions, alleging a lack of faith in God and claiming sacrilege.
Amidst the uproar, ruling coalition members condemned the YSRCP's actions while the opposition accused them of deflecting attention from the alleged ghee tender irregularities.
Leader of Opposition Botsa Satyanarayana insisted on a debate concerning the inflated contracts, pointing out that ghee, which was previously acquired at approximately Rs 320 per kg, is now being sold at around Rs 700 per kg through Indapur Dairy, which he claims is linked to Chandrababu Naidu's Heritage Foods, resulting in a significant price increase and a waste of public funds.
YSRCP president and former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy stated on Thursday that irregularities in supplying adulterated ghee for Tirupati laddu occurred during Naidu's administration, accusing him of shifting the blame to political rivals.
In a press conference, he outlined the alleged connection between Heritage and Indapur, asserting that Naidu's favored enterprises received undue benefits through the annulment of disqualifications, acceptance of rejected tankers, and contracts awarded at inflated prices.
He claimed that following the emergence of Indapur, Heritage transitioned from a manufacturing unit to a co-manufacturing unit, with a contract awarded for ghee at Rs 650 per kg, despite having supplied it at Rs 278 and Rs 321 previously.
He highlighted that during the TDP regime, rejected tankers were accepted, disqualifications were reversed for favored companies, and all firms, including Bola Baba, were encouraged by Heritage.
With all suspicions pointing toward Chandrababu, he continues to blame the YSRCP. He stated that the irregularities in ghee supply happened under the TDP regime, as indicated in the CBI chargesheet.
In response, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) chairman BR Naidu clarified that Heritage Foods has never supplied ghee to TTD. He accused the YSRCP of trying to mislead the public by linking Indapur Dairy to Heritage Foods to distract from their own involvement in supplying adulterated ghee during their term.
