Andhra Pradesh Issues Alert for HMPV; Telangana Provides Guidelines

Amaravati, Jan 6 (NationPress) The government of Andhra Pradesh has raised an alert concerning cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) detected in certain areas across the country.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a teleconference with relevant officials on Monday to discuss preventive strategies being implemented in the state. He instructed the Medical and Health Department officials to remain vigilant and implement all necessary precautions.

Upon learning from officials that there have been no reported cases of HMPV in the state, the Chief Minister requested ongoing monitoring of individuals entering from other regions and to conduct necessary testing when appropriate.

Minister for Medical and Health Satya Kumar and senior department officials participated in the teleconference.

Meanwhile, officials from the Telangana Health Department indicated that they are diligently observing the situation in conjunction with the Union Ministry of Health.

They have assured that there is no cause for concern regarding HMPV.

Director of Public Health B. Ravinder Nayak confirmed that no HMPV cases have been reported in the state to date.

Moreover, the Health Department noted no significant rise in respiratory illness cases in December 2024 compared to December 2023.

The department encourages the public to adhere to specific dos and don’ts as a precautionary measure.

The Health Department clarified that HMPV behaves similarly to other respiratory viruses, triggering common cold and flu-like symptoms, particularly in younger and older populations during the winter months.

As a precaution, citizens are urged to follow certain guidelines to protect against respiratory infections. People are advised to cover their mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing.

"Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use an alcohol-based sanitizer. Avoid crowded areas and maintain a distance of more than an arm’s length from individuals displaying flu symptoms," reads the advisory.

The public is encouraged to refrain from visiting public spaces if experiencing fever, cough, or sneezing. Staying hydrated and consuming nutritious food is recommended. Ensuring adequate ventilation with outdoor air is crucial in all environments to minimize transmission.

If feeling unwell, individuals are advised to remain at home and limit contact with others.

The Health Department also recommends against shaking hands and reusing tissues or handkerchiefs.
