Is Anvar’s Return Sparking a High-Stakes Political Showdown in Kerala?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 23 (NationPress) The comeback of P.V. Anvar to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has ignited the potential for a fierce and intense political clash as Kerala edges closer to the upcoming Assembly elections.
A two-time legislator who previously had the support of the Left, Anvar’s political journey has been marked by sudden shifts and strategic adjustments. His latest move, however, seems intentional and significant, aimed directly at challenging the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
Anvar has been upfront about his ambitions. He has stated that his main goal is to dethrone the LDF and has openly indicated his readiness to stand for election in any constituency designated by the UDF leadership. This represents a clear shift from his earlier position this year, when he stepped down as the Nilambur MLA following a contentious and abrupt fallout with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
At that time, Anvar had vowed to support the UDF unconditionally and had announced his withdrawal from electoral politics. However, this stance was short-lived. In a rapid turnaround, he later opposed the UDF and entered the race as an Independent -- a venture that ended in political humiliation. The Congress candidate triumphed decisively, while Anvar finished in a distant third place.
This setback temporarily isolated Anvar politically. Following discreet discussions, the UDF officially welcomed Anvar's Trinamool Congress (Kerala unit) as an associate member on Monday.
The political implications were swift. Billboards welcoming Anvar as a potential candidate emerged in and around the Beypore Assembly constituency in Kozhikode. The symbolism was unmistakable.
Beypore is represented by Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, who is also Chief Minister Vijayan’s son-in-law and one of the CPI(M)’s most prominent young leaders. A historical Left stronghold, Beypore has not elected a Congress MLA since 1977.
In recent elections, the CPI(M) has only solidified its hold, with Riyas winning his initial contest by a margin exceeding 28,000 votes -- the highest in the constituency’s recent history.
Nevertheless, Anvar’s open declaration of political warfare against Vijayan and Riyas has shifted the dynamics of the contest. By portraying Riyas as the Chief Minister’s primary political defender, Anvar has personalized the rivalry. The posters in Beypore indicate that the initial challenge has been issued, even as the UDF leadership has refrained from formally backing any candidacy.
Whether Anvar ultimately becomes a boon or a burden for the UDF is still uncertain. What is evident is that his return has introduced a level of unpredictability into an otherwise stable political landscape -- signaling that the lines of battle are being drawn much earlier than expected.
