Andhra Pradesh on 5 June 2025 launched the preparation and distribution of 2.5 crore seed balls across the state on World Environment Day, as part of a long-term push to raise the state's green cover to 50 per cent by 2047. Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Forests and Environment Pawan Kalyan inaugurated the initiative at Butterfly Park in Mulapadu, NTR district, personally participating in seed ball preparation alongside women, children, and community representatives.

Scale and Reach of the Drive

Seed ball preparation was simultaneously taken up at 300 locations across Andhra Pradesh, with Pawan Kalyan monitoring the statewide rollout via video conference from Mulapadu. He interacted with participants at multiple sites, inquiring about the seed varieties being used and quantities being produced. Officials have been directed to ensure all 2.5 crore seed balls are prepared by 15 June 2025.

Native Species at the Core

The seed balls were prepared using seeds of native tree species including tamarind, white karonda, neem, soapnut, mango, arjuna, banyan, Indian gooseberry, teak, and mahua. The use of indigenous species is intended to strengthen local biodiversity rather than introduce non-native varieties. Women from self-help groups, students, public representatives, officials, and members of voluntary organisations participated in the preparation process.

Drone Dispersal for Hard-to-Reach Areas

A notable feature of the drive is the use of drones to disperse seed balls onto hilltops and other areas difficult to access on foot. Pawan Kalyan observed a live demonstration of drone-based seed dispersal at the Mulapadu site. This technology-assisted approach is seen as a scalable method for reforesting terrain where conventional planting is not feasible.

In his World Environment Day message, the Deputy CM called for collective action on conservation. Pawan Kalyan stated: 'Protecting nature is not an option; it is our responsibility. Every tree we save, every river we protect, and every step we take against pollution is an investment in Bharat's future. I call upon every citizen to adopt sustainable practices and join the collective effort to build a cleaner, greener, and healthier Bharat. Pollution of our rivers, forests, and ecosystems is a threat to our collective future. Let us work together to restore the natural balance that sustains life.'

During his visit to the Forest Department stalls at Butterfly Park, he also directed officials to build a yoga hall in every eco-tourism park across the state, after a planned yoga hall at the Mulapadu site drew his attention.

With a deadline of 15 June for completing the seed ball target and drone deployment already underway, the initiative marks one of the state's most visible environmental actions ahead of the monsoon planting season.
