Srinagar, March 16 (NationPress) In a remarkable display of bravery, Indian Army personnel faced severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall, to successfully rescue 214 stranded individuals from the Sinthan Pass in Jammu and Kashmir, as reported by officials on Monday.
“Following significant snowfall that hampered movement through the Sinthan Pass, which links the Valley to the Kishtwar district in the Jammu division, soldiers from the 19 Rashtriya Rifles collaborated with the J&K Police to execute a coordinated rescue operation despite the unyielding snowfall, dangerous terrain, and severely limited visibility,” officials stated.
“In spite of the extreme weather and hazardous road conditions, the teams effectively evacuated 214 tourists and local residents, ensuring they were transported to safe locations,” the officials added.
Meanwhile, the higher elevations of J&K experienced new snowfall in the past 12 hours, with the famed ski resort of Gulmarg receiving fresh snow on Monday morning.
During the last 12 hours, Sinthan Pass recorded 12 inches, Zojila Pass received 5 inches, and Sonamarg saw 3 to 4 inches of new snow.
The MET department has predicted rain and snow in J&K until March 20.
Weather forecasts indicate generally cloudy skies with sporadic light to moderate rain and snow at various locations, particularly in the evenings and mornings, until March 20.
“From March 21 to 23, dry weather is anticipated in J&K. Travelers and transporters navigating the higher elevations and mountain passes should plan accordingly,” officials advised.
“Farmers are encouraged to halt agricultural activities until March 20,” the MET department officials recommended.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 5.3 degrees Celsius on Monday, while Gulmarg dipped to minus 2.5 and Pahalgam to 0.8 degrees Celsius.
In Jammu city, temperatures were reported at 11.3, Katra at 8.8, Batote at 4.4, Banihal at 4.5, and Bhaderwah at 3.5 degrees Celsius.
Heavy snowfall at Pir Ki Gali has led to the closure of the Mughal Road, which connects the Valley with Rajouri-Poonch in the Jammu division.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remains open for traffic today, as per the traffic department officials.
