Army's Rapid Response Averted Major Fire Disaster in Kolkata: Defence Ministry

Kolkata, Dec 22 (NationPress) The Defence Ministry has commended the Army's quick response in addressing a significant fire that erupted in a slum on December 21, noting that the incident could have resulted in severe consequences if not for the prompt action of Army personnel.
The blaze started beneath the Durgapur Bridge, near the B.P. Poddar Hospital and the railway tracks of the Sealdah-Budge Budge line.
"Exhibiting remarkable courage and efficiency, the personnel of the 121 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Garhwal Rifles, effectively prevented a major catastrophe in New Alipore, Kolkata, on Saturday. The fire posed a serious risk to lives and vital infrastructure in the vicinity. In response to the emergency, the battalion promptly deployed its Quick Reaction Team (QRT), equipped with firefighting equipment, an ambulance, and three water bowsers. Their swift action was crucial in controlling the flames, which were intensified by strong northwesterly winds," stated a spokesperson from the Defence Ministry in Kolkata.
He further mentioned that the unit worked diligently alongside the state fire services and local authorities, ensuring a unified effort that minimized damage and prevented the fire from escalating to nearby critical locations, including the hospital.
"A significant contribution from the battalion was their provision of water from their own resources to aid the fire trucks, which decreased refill times and improved firefighting efficiency. Troops also assisted in navigating narrow by-lanes by transporting heavy hoses, ensuring firefighting operations reached even the most difficult areas," he added.
In addition to firefighting duties, the soldiers connected with the affected community, providing comfort and support during the crisis. Their presence instilled a sense of safety and reassurance among those impacted.
"This outstanding effort highlights the crucial role of the Indian Army in disaster management and community welfare. The rapid and selfless actions of the 121 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army), Garhwal Rifles, have received widespread acclaim, reflecting the Army's unwavering commitment to protecting the nation and its citizens during emergencies," the spokesperson concluded.
