Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen K.T. Parnaik (retd.) on Sunday, 21 June 2025 said that yoga — an ancient practice rooted in India's civilisational heritage — has transcended geographical boundaries to become a universal pathway to holistic health, mental wellness, and overall well-being. The Governor made these remarks while participating in the International Day of Yoga (IDY) programme held at Lok Bhavan, Itanagar, organised by the Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University (IGTAMSU), Ziro, in collaboration with the Department of Youth Affairs.
Governor's Address: Yoga as Preventive Healthcare
Describing yoga as one of India's greatest gifts to humanity, Governor Parnaik said that in an era marked by stress, anxiety, lifestyle disorders, and sedentary habits, yoga offers a simple, cost-effective, and sustainable approach to preventive healthcare. He noted that its relevance has grown sharply in the post-pandemic world, where mental resilience, emotional balance, and positive living have become essential priorities.
Referring to the United Nations theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga — 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' — the Governor emphasised that yoga benefits people across all age groups, helping them maintain physical fitness, mental alertness, emotional well-being, and independence throughout life. He encouraged the youth and senior citizens in particular to incorporate yoga into their daily routines.
PM Modi's Role in Globalising Yoga
Governor Parnaik also highlighted the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 led to the formal adoption of the International Day of Yoga, backed by 175 countries. Through sustained global advocacy, yoga has since evolved into a worldwide movement promoting health, peace, and human unity.
As part of his continuing efforts to promote holistic wellness, the Governor distributed copies of his booklet 'Yoga for Common Health Challenges' among participants. Conceptualised and compiled by him, the publication provides practical yoga-based solutions for managing common health concerns and lifestyle-related ailments.
Chief Minister Khandu Celebrates IDY in Tawang
Separately, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu observed the International Day of Yoga at Jang in Tawang district, joining school children, personnel of the Indian Army, the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the Border Road Organisation (BRO), officials, and citizens for the occasion.
University and Community Participation
IGTAMSU Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr) K. Satya Lakshmi highlighted the university's initiatives to promote wellness and healthy living among students and the wider community. Students of the university presented a synchronised yoga demonstration showcasing agility, discipline, and composure.
