New Delhi, Feb 9 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed Ashok Kumar, an IAS officer from the 2006 batch, as the new Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, succeeding R Alice Vaz, according to an official announcement made on Monday.
The Principal Secretary of the ECI, Rahul Sharma, communicated Ashok Kumar's appointment to the Chief Secretary of Delhi, Rajeev Varma, through an official correspondence earlier on Monday.
In January, the electoral commission requested the Delhi government to submit a list of three IAS officers for the CEO selection, and Ashok Kumar was among those nominated by the Rekha Gupta administration.
The ECI's recent notice to the Chief Secretary stated that “Ashok Kumar shall cease to hold and hand over forthwith the charge of all or any charges of work under the Govt. of N.C.T. of Delhi, which he may be holding before such assumption of office.”
Furthermore, the ECI specified that Ashok Kumar, in his role as Chief Electoral Officer, will not hold any additional responsibilities under the Government of N.C.T. of Delhi, except for the title of Secretary to the Government in charge of the Election Department within the State Secretariat.
A notification from the ECI secretariat affirmed Ashok Kumar's appointment, stating, “In exercise of the powers conferred by subsection (1) of section 13A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950), the Election Commission of India, in consultation with the Government of N.C.T. of Delhi, hereby designates Shri Ashok Kumar, IAS (AGMUT: 2006) as the Chief Electoral Officer for the N.C.T. of Delhi effective from the date he assumes charge and until further orders, succeeding R Alice Vaz, IAS.”
The ECI also requested the Chief Secretary to republish the notification in the Delhi Gazette.
Additionally, the Delhi government has been instructed to ensure that Ashok Kumar takes charge of the CEO office in Delhi without delay.
