Guwahati, August 20 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, unveiled a range of developmental projects for Sootea while honoring freedom fighters during the Sootea Divas celebration.
CM Sarma initiated the foundation of a Rs 5 crore project aimed at turning the historic Sootea Police Station, where the Tricolour was first raised during the Quit India Movement in 1942, into a tourist attraction.
Additionally, he allocated Rs 2 crore for the construction of a new complex at the Open Bihu field, a vital hub for cultural events in the area.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s dedication to merging heritage conservation with progress.
“Our objective is to transform Sootea into not just a historical symbol but a center for cultural tourism and economic growth,” he remarked. He also underscored recent governmental efforts in the constituency, which include the promotion of Baresahariya Bhaona, the establishment of the Freedom Fighter Bhumidhar Bordoloi Memorial Stadium and hospital, along with infrastructure enhancements at Tyagbir Hem Baruah College.
Earlier that day, two new girls’ hostels and their main gates at the college were inaugurated, marking a significant advancement in academic resources. CM Sarma reiterated the government's vision for economic self-sufficiency through industrialization.
He announced the setting up of a tile manufacturing plant on 2,000 bighas of land in Sootea, which is expected to create substantial employment opportunities for local youth.
This initiative is linked to Advantage Assam 2.0, which has garnered investment proposals totaling Rs 5 lakh crore.
“Industrialization is not solely for the benefit of industrialists but aims to ensure our youth do not have to leave for low-paying jobs elsewhere,” he stated.
Moreover, to foster opportunities for the youth, the Chief Minister announced that Japanese language training centers will commence operations across Assam starting this November.
This initiative, he explained, will equip local youth for global employment prospects.
Reaffirming his administration’s vision, Sarma asserted that Assam must advance in all areas—tourism, industry, education, and culture—by drawing strength from the resilience of its people.
The event was graced by MLAs Padma Hazarika, Ganesh Limbu, Promode Borthakur, Utpal Bora, Krishna Kamal Tanti, Diganta Ghatowar, family members of freedom fighters, and numerous dignitaries.
