Guwahati, June 9 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday commended various opposition leaders for their support of India's position on global platforms after the nation's response to the Pahalgam terror attack. In a robust critique, he took aim at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of jeopardizing national interests.
During a session in the Assam Assembly focused on the successful ‘Operation Sindoor’, CM Sarma recognized the contributions of opposition figures such as Shashi Tharoor, Asaduddin Owaisi, and Supriya Sule, who he credited for advocating for India internationally.
“I extend my gratitude to Congress and other opposition leaders, particularly Shashi Tharoor, for their strong defense of India abroad. Leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi and Supriya Sule also defended the nation’s dignity on foreign soil,” stated CM Sarma.
In stark contrast, the Chief Minister accused Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, of betraying the nation and its armed forces.
“Rahul Gandhi failed to support the country. He has betrayed our nation and our armed forces,” asserted the Assam CM, criticizing Gandhi for questioning India's military losses during the conflict.
CM Sarma pointed out that while Gandhi continually sought information about India's casualties during the operation, he showed little concern for the damage inflicted on Pakistan.
“There’s a significant difference between questioning losses after a military operation and doing so while it’s still ongoing. Rahul Gandhi chose the latter—and never asked about the losses on the Pakistani side,” the Chief Minister emphasized.
Operation Sindoor was initiated in response to the lethal Pahalgam terror attack, and the Assembly resolution represented a collective acknowledgment of the Indian armed forces’ efforts in the counter-offensive.
Earlier on the same day, CM Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to expediting the deportation of illegal immigrants to protect the indigenous population.
While addressing the Assembly, he stated: "The state government plans to enforce the 1950 law to remove illegal immigrants from the region. The country’s apex court has also granted approval for this. The administrative apparatus will operate accordingly to make Assam free from illegal immigrants.”
The Chief Minister further emphasized the importance of protecting the interests of the Assamese people, asserting, “I am Assamese first and a Chief Minister second.”
The Assam government has decided to implement a little-known law from 1950—the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Order—to expedite the deportation of undocumented immigrants, circumventing the usual judicial procedures.
