Guwahati, April 16 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that comprehensive measures are underway to elevate the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) into one of the nation's largest healthcare institutions.
While assessing the development of the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital in Guwahati, Chief Minister Sarma stated that his administration has implemented all essential actions to ensure GMCH boasts advanced infrastructure and treatment capabilities.
He also mentioned that the upcoming Mother and Child Care Hospital within the GMCH grounds will provide focused and specialized pediatric services.
With a capacity of 800 beds, this facility will deliver cutting-edge medical care, and its campus is part of a broader initiative to comprehensively revamp GMCH.
The Chief Minister inspected the ongoing construction of the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital, which will serve as Guwahati's second medical institution.
Although the college is currently providing limited OPD services, Chief Minister Sarma indicated that the hospital is set to become fully functional by August 15 this year.
The hospital will feature 600 beds and accommodate 100 MBBS students upon completion.
Additionally, CM Sarma stated that the medical college will include amenities for various postgraduate programs, such as obstetrics and orthopaedics.
To enhance patient convenience, the hospital will also provide 100 paying cabins, as mentioned by the Chief Minister.
Plans are also in motion to build another structure with 500 beds at the medical college in the future.
CM Sarma reviewed the under-construction 800-bed Mother and Child care centre at GMCH, expected to be finalized by October.
Once completed, the GMCH Principal's office will relocate to the new hospital building, according to the Chief Minister.
Super-specialty services, including neurology, cardiology, and kidney transplant procedures, will be transferred to the new 800-bed MMC hospital, which is currently under rapid development, as stated by CM Sarma.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Commissioner and Secretary of Medical Education and Research, Siddharth Singh; Commissioner and Special Secretary of the Public Works Department, Chandan Sharma; and several other senior officials.
