Guwahati, Feb 27 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced on Friday that the state has made significant progress in enhancing maternal and child healthcare with the launch of a specialized Mother and Child Hospital at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister emphasized that this newly established facility aims to deliver improved and affordable healthcare services to women and infants. It forms a crucial part of the government's ongoing initiatives to lower the Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) in Assam.
"Another promise has been fulfilled. The recently opened Mother and Child Hospital will provide superior and cost-effective treatment for my sisters and newborn Bhagins, aligning with our broader mission to decrease MMR and IMR. Additionally, we are enhancing maternal care across all districts," Sarma stated.
The Chief Minister noted that the new hospital features state-of-the-art infrastructure and specialized medical services designed to meet the healthcare demands of pregnant women, mothers, and infants.
This facility is anticipated to substantially alleviate the pressure on existing departments at GMCH, thereby enhancing access to quality maternal and neonatal care.
Officials indicated that the Mother and Child Hospital will provide a wide range of services, including antenatal and postnatal care, management of high-risk pregnancies, neonatal intensive care, and emergency obstetric services.
They highlighted the importance of ensuring timely interventions to improve survival rates for both mothers and their newborns.
Sarma reiterated that enhancing maternal and child health is a high priority for the Assam government, pointing out that various initiatives have already produced favorable outcomes in recent years.
He remarked that Assam has achieved significant advancements in reducing maternal and infant mortality through expanded institutional deliveries, enhanced health infrastructure, and targeted welfare schemes.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that similar facilities and services are being improved across districts to guarantee equitable access to maternal healthcare, particularly in rural and remote regions.
District hospitals and medical colleges are being upgraded with better equipment, trained personnel, and referral systems.
Reaffirming the government's commitment, Sarma stated that quality healthcare is not merely a privilege but a fundamental right, and the state is dedicated to ensuring that no mother or child is deprived of timely and affordable treatment.
The inauguration of the Mother and Child Hospital at GMCH is regarded as a pivotal milestone in Assam's broader healthcare reform agenda aimed at enhancing public health outcomes.
