Guwahati, Jan 8 (NationPress) In a significant gesture, the Assam government has proclaimed a holiday in the Cachar district this Thursday to pay tribute to the esteemed BJP leader and former Minister of State for telecommunications, Kabindra Purkayastha, who passed away after a lengthy illness.

A senior official remarked, "This heartfelt tribute embodies the shared sorrow of the community and celebrates his impactful contributions, giving everyone the chance to remember his life and lasting legacy."

Purkayastha died on Wednesday at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

His final rites will take place on Thursday.

Numerous tributes have emerged from the senior ranks of the BJP in the wake of Purkayastha's passing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his profound sadness regarding Purkayastha's death, recalling him as a dedicated public servant who significantly influenced Assam's political and social landscape.

In a message on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister stated that Purkayastha's commitment to societal service and his contributions to Assam's advancement will be remembered fondly.

He acknowledged that the veteran leader was essential in fortifying the BJP's presence in the state through years of organizational efforts and community involvement.

"My thoughts are with his family and supporters during this difficult time. Om Shanti," PM Modi conveyed, offering his condolences to the grieving family and well-wishers.

Purkayastha's passing has prompted tributes from leaders across the political spectrum, many of whom celebrated his role in fostering the BJP's expansion in Assam and the Northeast.

He kickstarted his public journey by joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1951, subsequently taking on various prominent roles within the organization.

Purkayastha was pivotal in disseminating the RSS ideology throughout the Northeast, especially in Assam and the Barak Valley area.

Upon the establishment of the BJP in 1980, he became a founding member and played a crucial role in the party's foundational years in the state.

Widely recognized as the patriarch of the BJP in Assam, he was key in developing the party's grassroots support and enhancing its regional influence over the decades.

Purkayastha entered national politics in 1991, winning a seat in the Lok Sabha representing the Silchar constituency in Assam.

He successfully defended his seat in 1998, further solidifying his status as a leading figure from the Barak Valley.

Renowned for his eloquent advocacy on regional issues, he consistently highlighted topics relevant to Assam and the Northeast in Parliament.

Respected across party lines for his humility, ideological dedication, and organizational skills, Purkayastha leaves an indelible mark as one of the key architects of the BJP’s rise in Assam and the Northeast.
