Guwahati, Jan 16 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state's initiative towards a 'Silver Revolution' in the poultry sector is yielding significant outcomes, with a remarkable 28 percent increase in egg production for the 2024-25 financial year.
Using a well-known phrase to emphasize the significance of regular egg consumption, the Chief Minister pointed out that this production boost is ensuring affordable and reliable access to eggs, a vital source of protein and nutrition for residents across the state.
He highlighted that this initiative showcases the government's dual commitment to enhancing public health while bolstering rural livelihoods.
As per CM Sarma, this rise in egg production is a direct result of continuous policy backing for the poultry sector, featuring incentives for farmers, improved availability of quality chicks and feed, alongside enhanced veterinary and extension services.
These initiatives have not only boosted output but also lessened Assam's reliance on externally sourced eggs.
The Chief Minister noted the crucial role eggs play in mitigating nutritional deficiencies, especially among children, pregnant women, and economically disadvantaged groups. He added that increased local production is bolstering government nutrition initiatives such as mid-day meals and other welfare programs, ensuring improved dietary intake for beneficiaries.
CM Sarma also underscored the poultry sector's significance in generating employment and additional income for thousands of small farmers, women self-help groups, and rural entrepreneurs.
He stated that this sector has become a vital component of Assam's agrarian economy, contributing to income diversification and financial stability within rural communities.
Describing this growth as a step towards fostering a self-sufficient Assam, the Chief Minister affirmed that the government will persist in enhancing infrastructure, promoting scientific poultry practices, and expanding market connections to maintain this positive trend.
He added that initiatives are in progress to encourage value addition, the development of cold chains, and improved pricing strategies for producers.
The Assam government remains dedicated to fortifying the entire livestock and allied sectors, considering them fundamental in driving nutrition security, empowering farmers, and fostering inclusive growth.
“With escalating production, empowered poultry farmers, and enhanced nutritional access, we are gradually advancing towards a more robust and healthier Assam,” concluded CM Sarma.
