Guwahati, April 2 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government will soon formalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ISRO to establish its own satellite system.

Sarma informed the press: “We have been in discussions with ISRO, and the MoU will be finalized shortly. The initial phases of our satellite system are expected to commence by the end of this year.”

He also mentioned that the state aims to deploy at least four to five satellites to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Furthermore, he explained that these satellites will be low-earth orbiting and each will concentrate on distinct regions. The state’s satellite system, named ASSAMSAT, will feature a command and control center located in Guwahati.

Sarma stated that the ASSAMSAT will be monitored from Guwahati, where the command center will manage Assam’s satellite constellation.

The Chief Minister outlined several advantages the ASSAMSAT initiative will provide to the region.

He indicated that it would enhance disaster management and security by monitoring illegal activities and wildlife. Additionally, it will support development applications such as agricultural land use and road network surveillance.

“In conjunction with education and skill development, Assam’s own satellite will foster increased participation from the private sector,” he added.

In the recent state budget announcement, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog confirmed that Assam will establish its own satellite system. To advance technological progress and scientific research within the state, Finance Minister Neog recently unveiled the ambitious plan to launch ASSAMSAT.

This transformative initiative aims to enhance communication networks, improve disaster management strategies, and support various development projects throughout Assam.

During her budget presentation, Neog stressed that ASSAMSAT represents a vital milestone for enhancing the state’s digital infrastructure.

The satellite is anticipated to improve connectivity in remote regions, facilitating better access to telecommunication services, e-governance platforms, and educational resources.

Finance Minister Neog indicated that the state government will partner with leading space research organizations, including the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), to develop and launch the satellite.
