Guwahati, April 7 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that ISRO will assist in deploying a series of satellites across Assam. CM Sarma held discussions with ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan in the national capital on the same day.
In a post on X, Sarma stated: "I had a fruitful meeting with the knowledgeable Chairman of @isro, Mr. V. Narayanan. We thoroughly discussed Assam’s ambitious space initiatives. ISRO is fully committed to aiding Assam in launching its inaugural satellite. These will likely be low Earth orbit satellites, providing continuous coverage of the state. This advancement will benefit various sectors such as flood management, policy formulation, and tackling infiltration. We will be signing a MoU with ISRO soon to support this endeavor."
The Chief Minister also revealed plans for a significant space observatory to be established in Guwahati.
“The Chandrapur area in Guwahati will soon host a major space observatory that will facilitate India’s satellite launches. We anticipate the first phase to be operational by January 2026. During my meeting, Mr. Narayanan graciously explained the intriguing functions of the cryogenic-powered GSLV launch vehicle. This technology will also be employed in docking and berthing as India prepares for Mission Gaganyaan,” added CM Sarma.
He noted that the state will deploy at least four to five satellites to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Furthermore, he clarified that these satellites will operate in low-Earth orbit, each focusing on different regions. The planned satellite system, named ASSAMSAT, will have its command and control center located in Guwahati.
Sarma emphasized that ASSAMSAT will be managed from Guwahati, with the center overseeing the state's satellite constellation.
The Chief Minister highlighted several advantages that ASSAMSAT will provide to the region.
He mentioned that this initiative will enhance disaster management and security efforts, such as monitoring illegal infiltration and wildlife. Additionally, it will support development applications like agricultural land use and road network oversight.
“In addition to fostering education and skill development, Assam’s satellite will promote greater private sector involvement in the state,” he remarked.
In the latest state budget, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog announced that Assam would establish its satellite system. To promote technological advancement and scientific research, Neog shared the state's ambitious plan to deploy its satellite, ASSAMSAT.
This pioneering initiative aims to enhance communication networks, improve disaster management capabilities, and support various development projects throughout Assam.
During her budget speech, Neog stressed that ASSAMSAT will be a vital step in fortifying the state’s digital infrastructure.
The satellite is expected to improve connectivity in remote regions, thereby providing better access to telecommunications, e-governance platforms, and educational resources.
