Guwahati, Jan 16 (NationPress) With a significant focus on renewable energy, the Assam government aspires to produce a minimum of 3,500 MW of solar power in the coming five years.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that this ambitious target emphasizes the government’s strong commitment to clean, renewable, and sustainable energy solutions.

He noted that solar energy will be crucial in fulfilling the state's future energy demands while decreasing reliance on fossil fuels.

The target signifies Assam's dedication to aligning with India's national climate objectives and transitioning towards a low-carbon economy.

As stated by the Chief Minister, the state's government is implementing a comprehensive strategy to enhance solar generation, which includes utility-scale solar parks, rooftop solar installations, and decentralized solar solutions for rural and remote regions.

He added that Assam's geographical advantages, along with enhanced policy support, position the state favorably for rapid expansion of its solar capabilities.

CM Sarma mentioned that the administration is promoting large-scale investments in solar projects through investor-friendly policies, expedited approvals, and upgraded grid infrastructure.

Engagement with public sector enterprises, private developers, and central agencies is being prioritized to expedite capacity growth across various districts.

A significant focus is also on advancing rooftop solar systems on government buildings, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.

These initiatives are anticipated to lower power expenses for public infrastructure while showcasing the practicality of clean energy solutions at the community level.

The Chief Minister expressed that the expansion of solar energy will also create job opportunities, particularly for local youth, technicians, and entrepreneurs involved in installation, maintenance, and related services.

Moreover, he stated that the push for renewable energy complements Assam's broader objectives of economic growth, environmental conservation, and energy security.

Officials revealed that the Assam government is investigating hybrid renewable models, integrating solar with other clean energy sources, while enhancing transmission and distribution networks to accommodate higher renewable energy integration.

He emphasized that the state’s solar mission is not solely about megawatts but about creating a resilient and future-ready energy infrastructure.

"With a definitive target of 3,500 MW by 2030, Assam is determined to establish itself as a leading renewable energy state in the Northeast," he stated, emphasizing that this transition will yield benefits for both current and future generations.
