Giriraj Singh accuses Rahul Gandhi of fomenting community rift over 'untouchability' remarks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday, 30 August accused Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, of deliberately stoking divisions among social communities in what Singh characterised as a naked 'pursuit of power'. The remarks from the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader came a day after Gandhi demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi order the filing of an FIR over the alleged 'shuddikaran' — or purification — of the Ramlila ground in Haldwani after Indian National Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a public rally there.
The 'Shuddikaran' Row That Sparked the Clash
Gandhi had alleged that BJP-RSS members carried out a ritual purification of the venue after Kharge's address, calling it a constitutional offence. 'The word Shuddhikaran (purification) is just another word for untouchability,' the LoP stated. He also alleged visible caste discrimination at tea stalls, claiming Dalits are served in disposable paper or plastic cups while others receive reusable glass cups.
Giriraj Singh's Counter-Attack
Singh dismissed both charges as politically motivated theatre. 'Rahul Gandhi is now thinking about how to create infighting among communities in a society, whether in the name of students or others,' he said. He went further, alleging that the very leaders raising the untouchability charge had themselves exhibited discriminatory behaviour. 'I have seen on social media that Khargeji, Rahulji and Soniaji were there (at an event). Khargeji was giving water, but they didn't drink that. So, they themselves are propagating untouchability,' Singh claimed.
On the tea-stall allegation specifically, Singh alleged that a photograph showed Gandhi 'himself was drinking tea in a glass cup while the others were served in paper cups.' He called the episode 'a mischief by him only.' Singh also accused Gandhi of having no genuine concern for Dalits. 'For him, it doesn't matter whether this pursuit of power sets the whole country on fire or creates a divide between Dalits and non-Dalits,' he alleged.
BJP Broadens the Offensive
BJP National Secretary Rohan Gupta echoed Singh's criticism, arguing that the Congress had 'unsuccessfully tried to do politics in the name of Dalits even during the Lok Sabha elections.' Gupta alleged that the party's invocation of the Constitution masked an agenda of religious appeasement, pointing to remarks by the Telangana Chief Minister. 'Why does their Telangana Chief Minister say that Congress means Muslims, Muslims means Congress? So, Congress is making an unsuccessful attempt to hide appeasement behind the Constitution,' Gupta said.
Context and What This Signals
The exchange is the latest flashpoint in a sustained BJP-Congress battle over Dalit identity politics — a contest that sharpened through the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign and has only intensified since. Notably, the Haldwani purification episode follows a pattern of Congress using public-meeting controversies to spotlight caste discrimination, while the BJP frames such moves as divisive. Both parties are angling for Dalit votes ahead of several state assembly elections. Singh's assertion that 'the entire country is against the practice of untouchability' signals that the BJP is eager to reclaim moral ground on the issue rather than cede it to the opposition.
