Hyderabad, June 10 (NationPress) Mohammed Azharuddin, a prominent Congress leader and former captain of the Indian cricket team, has seen his son, Mohammed Asaduddin, take on the esteemed role of General Secretary for the party's Telangana unit.
Expressing his pride, Azharuddin conveyed heartfelt wishes to his son as he embarks on this significant journey.
"This moment fills me with pride and emotion as Mohammed Asaduddin assumes his official duties in public service as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress," Azharuddin shared on X.
"Having witnessed his dedication to the community, his zeal for service, and his genuine nature, I hope he remains grounded, focused, and aligned with the core values that truly matter. I wish him immense success in this new role," the former cricket captain remarked.
On Monday, the Congress leadership unveiled a list of 27 vice-presidents and 69 general secretaries for the Telangana unit.
This announcement, sanctioned by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, marks a significant organizational shift.
Asaduddin, the first-born son of Azharuddin from his initial marriage, is also a domestic cricketer and is married to Anam Mirza, sister of tennis sensation Sania Mirza.
Currently, Azharuddin serves as the Working President of the Telangana Congress after an unsuccessful bid for the Telangana Assembly seat from the Jubilee Hills constituency in 2023.
In that election, sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) defeated Azharuddin by over 16,000 votes. Tragically, Gopinath passed away on June 8 due to a cardiac arrest.
The Congress party is expected to nominate Azharuddin again for the Jubilee Hills by-election.
Azharuddin was elected to the Lok Sabha from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh in 2009 shortly after joining the Congress. In 2014, he contested from Rajasthan's Ton-Sawai Madhopur but faced defeat.
In 2018, he was appointed as the Working President of the Telangana unit and played a crucial role in campaigning for the party during the 2018 Assembly elections. However, he was not fielded in the subsequent Assembly or Lok Sabha elections.
