Raipur, July 28 (NationPress) Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel publicly condemned Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai for his recent announcement regarding a proposed legislation aimed at regulating religious conversions. He questioned the relevance of introducing new legislation when a similar one is already in place.
Baghel criticized the BJP-led state government for its political theatrics and lack of understanding of legislative processes.
His remarks followed CM Vishnu Deo Sai's address at the Hindu National Convention in Chhattisgarh, where he announced the drafting of a law intended to restrict religious conversions in the state.
In an interview with IANS, Baghel stated, “Vishnu Deo Sai occupies the esteemed position of Chief Minister yet appears oblivious to the fact that a law concerning religious conversion was enacted during the tenure of former CM Raman Singh. The bill was introduced in the Assembly on August 2, 2006, and was passed the following day on August 3. However, it has remained stagnant between Raj Bhavan and Rashtrapati Bhavan ever since. Has he even bothered to check its status?”
“Why is the BJP government contemplating a new law when one already exists but has yet to be enforced?” Baghel continued.
“Simply implement the legislation that was passed. Vishnu Deo Sai seems entirely uninformed. He doesn’t even realize that the previous bill was ratified by the Assembly.”
Baghel also commented on the recent arrest of two Catholic nuns from Kerala in Chhattisgarh.
“There is a complete breakdown of law and order in Chhattisgarh. Individuals are being detained without adequate investigation. Complaints should prompt inquiries, not immediate arrests. Venugopal has even reached out to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister regarding this concerning situation,” Baghel remarked.
Earlier, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal alleged that incidents targeting minorities have surged under BJP governance.
Baghel accused the BJP of intentionally targeting minority groups.
“Be it Christians, Muslims, or Sikhs, all are being persecuted to polarize the majority vote bank. This is the true motivation behind these aggressive actions. These issues have also been voiced in Parliament, where protests have erupted against such tactics.”
Baghel further highlighted the disintegration of public safety in the state.
“Every week, there are ten murders. Instances of gunfire are on the rise. What kind of governance is this? And in Raipur, the same IG remains unchallenged, while SPs and SHOs face transfers. No one questions the IG because he is unaccountable to the Chief Minister or anyone higher up. The Chief Minister is too fearful to transfer him,” he concluded.
