Bankipur by-poll: NDA eyes comfortable win, RJD pushes for united Opposition front
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar has drawn sharp political battle lines, with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders projecting a decisive victory and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislators urging Opposition parties to field a joint candidate against the ruling alliance's nominee. The bypoll was necessitated after sitting MLA Nitin Nabin was elevated to the post of BJP National President.
NDA's Confidence in a Party Stronghold
Janata Dal (United) National Working President Sanjay Jha described the bypoll as carrying special significance for the state. 'This is a very proud moment for the entire state of Bihar, especially for the voters of the Bankipur constituency, that their MLA or the Minister from there has become the National President of the biggest party in the country. And perhaps, this is the first time in the BJP that someone from Bihar has become the National President... Undoubtedly, the voters there will support the NDA with a very large margin,' Jha said.
BJP National Spokesperson Guru Prakash was equally bullish, asserting that the party's deep roots in the constituency would translate into a lopsided outcome. 'This is not just an interesting contest; it will be a bumper victory. The people of Bankipur have consistently given their mandate and blessings to the Bharatiya Janata Party since 1995. No one should remain under any illusion...' he said.
BJP Fields Abhishek Kumar as Candidate
The BJP's Central Election Committee has approved Abhishek Kumar as the party's official candidate for the Bankipur bypoll. The announcement was made by BJP National General Secretary and headquarters in-charge Arun Singh. Kumar, a close aide of BJP chief Nitin Nabin, has been associated with the party organisation for several years and previously served as Vice-President of the BJP Yuva Morcha in the Bankipur region.
Opposition Calls for Closing Ranks
RJD legislator Bhai Virendra appealed to all Opposition parties to unite behind a single candidate to mount a credible challenge in what is widely regarded as a BJP bastion. 'The ruling government effectively contests by-elections. Everyone knows why the Bankipur Assembly seat fell vacant. I had appealed to all the Opposition parties to field a joint candidate against the NDA so that it could be defeated. If any party wants to pursue its own agenda or strategy, I have nothing to say about that,' said Virendra.
Notably, the INDIA bloc's ability to consolidate behind a single candidate remains uncertain, with individual parties yet to publicly commit to a unified strategy.
Why Bankipur Matters
Bankipur is one of Bihar's most prominent urban constituencies and has returned BJP candidates consistently since 1995, making it one of the party's most reliable urban seats in the state. The seat's vacancy — triggered by the sitting MLA's ascent to the BJP's national presidency — has added an unusual emotional and symbolic dimension to the contest. A loss here would be a significant reputational blow for the ruling alliance; a win would further entrench NDA's grip ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
With campaign pitches already rising on 8 July, all major parties are expected to mount intensive ground-level drives in the days ahead.
