Kolkata, Sep 13 (NationPress) On Saturday afternoon, West Bengal's Education Minister Bratya Basu subtly accused Governor C.V. Ananda Bose of failing to ensure adequate security measures at the prestigious Jadavpur University in Kolkata. This alleged negligence resulted in the tragic drowning of a third-year English literature student on campus Thursday night.

Although Basu refrained from explicitly naming the Governor, he alluded to the Governor's role as Chancellor of all state universities.

During a public event, Basu remarked that ongoing disagreements with the state education department concerning full-time vice-chancellors in state universities have left Jadavpur University under the leadership of an interim vice-chancellor.

Basu emphasized that the absence of a permanent vice-chancellor has hindered vital administrative actions, including the enhancement of the internal security system on campus, ultimately resulting in the unfortunate incident.

“When we had a full-time vice-chancellor, operations were smooth. However, now, a leading state university is left without proper leadership. This situation arose while a matter was pending in the Supreme Court, leading to chaos at the university. Due to this chaos, students' lives are now at risk,” Basu stated.

He further expressed that operating an esteemed institution like Jadavpur University without a permanent vice-chancellor inevitably leads to such irregularities.

“There have been previous incidents of tension. What Jadavpur University urgently requires is a permanent vice-chancellor,” Basu stated plainly.

In response to Basu's remarks, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, former state BJP president in West Bengal and current Union minister of state for education, criticized the education minister for politicizing the tragic yet accidental death of a student.

“I urge the state education minister to support the victim's family instead of turning this issue into a political debate,” Majumdar said.

Point of View

It is crucial to maintain a neutral stance on the ongoing situation at Jadavpur University. While the Education Minister's comments may point to systemic issues within the state's education framework, the focus should remain on ensuring student safety and addressing the leadership void at the institution. Political motives should not overshadow the urgent need for reform.
