Should CM Mamata Banerjee Intervene to Halt 'Dangerous' Eco-Friendly Firecracker Training?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, February 11 (NationPress) The Sara Bangla Atashbaji Unnayan Samity (All Bengal Fireworks Development Association) has reached out to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with serious concerns regarding the 'risky' training being conducted under the guise of producing eco-friendly firecrackers, as reported on Wednesday.
A copy of this letter has also been forwarded to the Chief Secretary of the state, Nandini Chakraborty, and the Additional Chief Secretary for the Small and Cottage Industries Department.
In the letter, dated Tuesday, the association has called for prompt administrative action.
The chairperson of the association, Babla Roy, expressed that in the Badge Budge area of South 24 Parganas district, the training being provided on 'environmentally safe fireworks' is actually teaching the creation of illegal and perilous fireworks labeled as 'cold pyro'.
Roy stated that these products are not classified as fireworks and involve the use of hazardous chemicals such as 'nitrocellulose' and 'amyl perchlorate' in their production.
The letter emphasizes that these chemicals lack approval from the Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization (PESO) and are listed as banned.
Furthermore, the correspondence warns that if such training is provided to unlicensed and untrained individuals, it could result in situations that spiral out of administrative control. Should this training on fireworks proliferate, it may lead to uncontrollable circumstances, potentially resulting in catastrophic accidents and loss of life.
The letter also referenced the recent Anandapur fire incident, which tragically took the lives of 27 individuals.
The association argues that the use of substandard, unauthorized, and prohibited materials in that incident was a major contributing factor to the fatalities. To avert similar occurrences, they are advocating for mandatory retention of quality test reports and associated invoices from laboratories sanctioned by the Ministry of Forests and Environment and the National Accreditation Board of Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) by firework manufacturers.
They believe that this will facilitate a more accurate determination of causes following any accidents.
