Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 7 (NationPress) The management of Deben Mahata Government Medical College and Hospital in Purulia district of West Bengal has taken decisive action by suspending two senior students for two years due to their alleged participation in a ragging incident involving a first-year student.
As part of their punishment, these two medical students will be prohibited from residing in the college hostel in the future.
The parents of the victim expressed their approval of the college's measures, which were disclosed on Saturday.
On February 1, a first-year medical student named Mehboob Islam reported being subjected to ragging in his hostel room by Rishabh Singh, a second-year student, and Ayan Bagchi, a fourth-year student.
Mehboob claimed that, under the instigation of the two seniors, several other upperclassmen physically assaulted him, necessitating medical treatment.
Upon hearing about the incident, Mehboob's family traveled from Domkal in Murshidabad district to the college in Purulia on Friday and submitted a formal complaint to the authorities.
The family warned of legal action if the college did not enforce strict measures against the involved students.
In response to the complaint, the college initiated an investigation. Evidence of ragging was discovered, leading to disciplinary action against the two students.
On Saturday, college principal Sabyasachi Das met with the family of the victim. Following this discussion, the penalties for the accused were revealed.
Addressing the delay, Das explained, “I was in Kolkata for health reasons. The hospital superintendent temporarily took over my responsibilities. Upon learning of the incident, I returned promptly to the college to discuss the issue with the victim's family.
“We have implemented the necessary actions against the two accused students. To prevent similar occurrences in the future, the college is establishing a helpline and enhancing CCTV surveillance,” he noted.
The victim's mother, Molina Khatun, stated, “Initially, our complaint was not taken seriously. Later, under pressure, the college authorities complied with our requests. We are satisfied with the disciplinary actions taken against the accused.”
