Is Bengal SIR Responsible for the Deletion of Voters?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress MLA Saokat Molla, representing Canning (Purba) Assembly in South 24 Parganas district, has filed an FIR against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar at the Jibantala Police Station. Molla alleges that the CEC is culpable for the removal of numerous valid voters from the electoral rolls within his constituency.
On Friday afternoon, Molla visited the Jibantala Police Station to officially lodge his complaint against the CEC.
“In my Assembly constituency, the names of many genuine voters have been erroneously removed during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision in the state. These individuals have been long-time residents. Some of their names were even included in the voters’ list dating back to 1980. The Election Commission of India is attempting to disenfranchise these voters of their democratic rights, with the CEC being the main perpetrator in this scenario. Hence, I have submitted an FIR against him,” Molla stated.
He claims that approximately 33,000 voters have been wiped from the list just in the past three days. “This is a serious issue. Despite my attempts to address it at the administrative level, there has been no resolution. I will also be filing a similar FIR at the adjacent Bhangar Assembly constituency,” Molla added.
He further expressed that the ECI seems to be acting under the influence of a specific political party, resulting in genuine voters suffering as a consequence.
At the time of this report, there had been no statement from the ECI or the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal regarding the allegations.
Coincidentally, a police complaint was filed against Molla at Bhangar Police Station by fellow party member Kaiser Ahmed, who accused Molla of engaging a contract killer to eliminate him. Kaiser Ahmed has requested police protection for himself and his family.
