Kolkata, May 17 (NationPress) The West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has announced the immediate suspension of an officer engaged in the electoral process for his unacceptable conduct, which the CEO's office describes as gross misconduct in the execution of his duties.
In a directive from CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal, action was taken against Arun Gorain, the assistant system manager from the Kakdwip sub-division in South 24 Parganas district. This decision followed a complaint alleging that he had inserted his mobile number into the login credentials of a block development officer (BDO) and assistant election returning officer (AERO) in the same district.
Upon receiving a showcause notice, Gorain claimed that he had taken appropriate actions to prevent such incidents from happening again and expressed remorse. However, the CEO's office deemed his actions as gross misconduct and indicative of malicious intent, highlighting that he engaged in fraud and deceit by inserting his mobile number into the BDO and AERO's login credentials unlawfully.
The order further indicates that Gorain's actions constituted a severe violation of his official duties under Section 32 of the Representation of the People's Act, 1950, making him susceptible to prosecution.
Consequently, Gorain has been suspended pending the conclusion of major penalty proceedings, which will commence following the receipt of the draft charge sheet. During this suspension period, he will receive a subsistence allowance in accordance with his service conditions, as stated in the order.
