Kolkata, May 27 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated legal action against two government officials in West Bengal involved in the electoral process, citing irregularities in the voters' lists for which they were accountable.

One of the individuals is Sudipto Biswas, an inspector from the West Bengal cooperation department, while the other is Avijit Patra, a clerk from the same department.

Both were actively participating in the electoral activities at Namkhana block, located in the South 24 Parganas district.

Earlier this week, the ECI also took action against Arun Gorain, an assistant system manager from Kakdwip sub-division of the same district, suspending him due to allegations of inappropriate conduct, which the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal described as “gross misconduct in the performance of his duties.”

Gorain was accused of inserting his mobile number into the login details of a Block Development Officer (BDO) and an Assistant Election Returning Officer in the same area.

According to a source from the CEO's office, an inquiry was launched following reports of discrepancies in the voters' lists within South 24 Parganas, particularly in Namkhana and Kakdwip.

The reported irregularities involved the inclusion of fraudulent names in the voters' list, insufficient removal of deceased voters, and cases where voters possessed duplicate EPIC cards.

“An inquiry against Patra and Biswas has commenced following the FIRs lodged against them,” confirmed the insider from the CEO's office.

Recently, the ECI also launched an investigation after complaints surfaced regarding the wife of BJP’s West Bengal president and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar holding two voters' cards from different districts.

Sources within the CEO’s office emphasized that they are taking every complaint regarding voters' list irregularities seriously, aiming to ensure that the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal proceed with an error-free voter roll.

The BJP, particularly the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, has been vocal about the necessity for stringent oversight of state government employees involved in the electoral process.

Point of View
