Is the West Bengal CEO Investigating a Trinamool Councillor's Dual Voter IDs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Oct 29 (NationPress) The Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal has initiated a request for a report from the District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas regarding allegations that a female councillor from the Trinamool Congress possesses two voter ID cards issued from different Assembly constituencies.
According to sources within the CEO's office, once a comprehensive report is received from the district magistrate and the district electoral officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the CEO, will issue the necessary directives on how to proceed with this case.
It is anticipated that the implicated Trinamool Congress councillor will receive a notice requesting her explanations on this matter, and actions will be determined based on her response.
Sources from the CEO's office noted, "The Election Commission of India has emphasized the removal of deceased and duplicate voters from the electoral rolls during this special intensive revision. Consequently, the CEO's office is treating all reported instances of duplicate voters with utmost seriousness."
The councillor in question, Namita Sardar, is reportedly listed in the voters' rolls of two constituencies: Baruipur Paschim and Kultali, both situated in the South 24 Parganas district. She currently serves as the councillor for Ward No. 7 of Baruipur Municipality.
Her spouse, Bivas Sardar, is the Trinamool Congress MLA for the Baruipur (Purba) Assembly constituency, also located in South 24 Parganas.
This issue was raised by Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly, who provided supporting documents to the Election Commission of India.
Adhikari has urged the commission to promptly revoke Sardar's second voter ID and file a First Information Report (FIR) against her for breaching electoral regulations.
On Tuesday, Adhikari disclosed that the name of Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, is registered in Bihar's Rohtas district under Kargahar Assembly constituency (209) and Rohtas Lok Sabha constituency, as well as in Bhabanipur Assembly constituency (159) and Kolkata (Dakshin) Lok Sabha constituency (23) in West Bengal.
